The redesign of this Bay Area penthouse involved a full remodel down to the stud walls, introducing a Georgian vernacular into a classical Beaux Arts–style building with meticulously detailed spaces inspired by the work of Sir John Soane and Sir Edwin Lutyens. Twelve-foot-tall ceilings beautifully enabled a new architectural layout that spun off all the spaces—the living room, kitchen, butler’s kitchen, and bedroom suites—from a vaulted octagonal entry. The design concept was to color the elegance of the residence with the welcoming ease of an English country house. Throughout, the clients’ artwork, collections, and love of the color blue guided our choices. With 360-degree views, this apartment effortlessly captures the beauty of light as it transitions from morning to night.
