This property spoke to me the moment I entered and saw the enchanted garden, with wonderful old oaks, towering cedars and redwoods, magnolias, and giant bird-of-paradise palms. A two-bedroom, two-bath retreat with a lovely lap pool, it is my serene happy place. The house started life as a bungalow, probably built in 1909 for the field hands who tended to the original forty- acre citrus grove. The late designer James Northcutt gave the house its first charming face-lift. We have decorated it for ease—a blend of simple surfaces, canvas slipcovers, accents of blue and white, and a few sentimental pieces, including an antique mirror from Michael Taylor’s house— as a peaceful sanctuary from what I do every day for others.
